Jean was trained as a metalsmith to hammer sheets of sterling silver, copper, and brass into hollow forms. In the three bodies of work presented below, colorful tin is shaped and hammered over wooden forms using a variety of nails and upholstery tacks. Her primary material is found metal, including olive oil cans, baking tins, tin ceiling material, and tins for storing food. The metal was collected through a very social activity at local restaurants, groceries, and junk stores. She rescues this beautiful found metal, lays it out like fabric, embosses it, and obsessively assembles new patterns that reference games, collections, and instructions.
